Take a Kitchen Kettle Field Trip

Last summer I began this adventure of writing a blog about corporate culture at Kitchen Kettle Village.  The people who say writing takes discipline are right.  I have managed to finish describing the foundation of our business – our vision, mission and values.  This Village of shops, restaurants and lodging rooms we call Kitchen Kettle does not happen by magic.  We all feel a little more confident knowing what direction we’re going, what we’re expected to do along the way and how to decide what course to take when a question comes up.

So how does all this “corporate speak” play out in the real world of Kitchen Kettle?  In lots of places, but the Jam & Relish Kitchen is the best place to see it at work.  Remember the QFACTs?  Quality raw materials are the basis of our world famous jams, pickles and salsas.  Have you ever heard the Amish girls singing in the kitchen while they are making jelly?  That’s how they have fun.  You won’t find a more active crew anywhere – they do work hard!  The clean kitchen is evident to anyone who just looks in the window from the retail sales floor.  And the teamwork – they each have their own piece of the process that makes the jar of jam which ends up on the shelves of the Jelly Room.

Each store in our Village uses those QFACTs as a standard to rate the experience they are delivering to our guests.

What standard do you use either at work or at home with your family?  Do you have a vision that drives your behavior?  If  you want to find out more, you might enjoy a Kitchen Kettle Field Trip.  You can take one of your own or sign up for the one we offer for a little more in-depth look at the foundations of business – vision, mission and values.  Check it out under the Our Village Tours and Training  section of www.kitchenkettle.com

Just in Time for Christmas!

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? I just wrapped my first present, which puts me way ahead of where I usually am this time of year. My husband gets most of the credit, though. He always wants me to bring home his favorite Kitchen Kettle products to give as gifts to his co-workers, so I pick up extras for MY friends and family. This year they’re getting some of our newest products: Raspberry Mustard, Dill Pickle Chips, and one of my new favorites – Mango Salsa. It’s easy gift-giving … and always so appreciated. The wrapping is easy, too – I just wrap a pretty ribbon around the box and it’s good to go!

Tailgate Time!

It’s a little cooler in Intercourse, Pennsylvania today.  We’re setting out bales of straw and mums, pumpkins, all that great fall stuff.  The summer flowers are still blooming so it may seem a bit confusing, but with the cool breeze comes thoughts of football games and tailgate season.  Last year we were all excited about Kitchen Kettle Kickin’ Pickles and Sweet Pickles.  Every tailgate meal needs pickles.  So this year there’s a few more – Perfect Pickles and Dill Pickles.  One of the four of them is in all the lodging rooms here at Kitchen Kettle because they’re so popular and some are brand new.  Gotta’ help where we can to get the word around.

Speaking of spreading the word, next weekend is the 7 Sweets & Sours Festival.  For 35 years we’ve been celebrating the end of the garden and harvest season in Lancaster County.  We’ve had lots of different themes, the latest is tailgating.  Kristine and Tom  have come up with some great recipes for those parties before the game.  And lest you think football is the only fall sport, here at Kitchen Kettle we have some of our own.  Like pumpkin bowling (in honor of Pumpkin Butter I guess), quoits (remember those?) and whoopie pie filling races.  There’s great music all day,  not just at halftime; lots of sampling and extra entertainers.  Wear your sports jersey or sweatshirt and root for your favorite team.

See you next Friday.  There’s only one or two rooms left at the Inn at Kitchen Kettle so hurry if you want to spend the night.

Fried Pickles…Say What?

Have you tried the new Kitchen Kettle pickles yet? If you didn’t already know, we have a new line of pickles that are scrumptious. The Kickin’ Pickle Chips have just enough heat to make things interesting and the Sweet Pickle Chips have a sweet, crisp taste that is hard to beat. Now for the fun part…have you ever had fried pickles? Kristine Grego our “Food Specialist,” made fried pickles as part of her tailgating demonstration at the 7 Sweets & Sours Tailgating Festival a few weeks ago. Quite honestly, I thought it sounded pretty bizarre, but then I sampled one. They were so good! So, here’s the recipe for you to try at home or at your next tailgate. It is definitely a conversation piece. Let me know if you have any fun or bizarre recipes that use Kitchen Kettle products. I would love to hear them!

Andy Reid won!

1st Place Scarecrow Andy ReidOkay, so Andy won. Not just the football game Sunday night, but also the scarecrow contest at Kitchen Kettle’s 7 Sweets & Sours Festival. I hate that the Steelers lost, but Andy’s had a tough year. I guess it was his turn. If you missed seeing the scarecrow of Andy, he was bigger than life in front of the Tee Parlour. And Lucky Strike came in second. The office team is big on bowling so it was only fitting that their bowler would win a prize. By the way, if you’ve never gone pumpkin bowling, it was a lot of fun at the festival. Ears of corn served as bowling pins and nice round pumpkins for bowling balls – who d’a thunk it?

The other pretty unusual item at the Festival was french fried kickin’ pickles. If you haven’t tried the kickin’ pickles just out of the jar, start there. The habanero pepper gives the kick. But Kristine decided to french fry them for a tailgate party and WOW! they’re even better than alone.

It was great to see so many people here in the Village. All this talk of gloom and doom, we’re not hearin’ it. The weather was perfect, the football game was on, we were all dressed in our favorite team jerseys, the bands were playin’, the cheerleaders were here and all was right with the world at Kitchen Kettle Village for those two days. If you weren’t here, sorry you missed it.

Banjo Jimmy is pickin’ away outside my window. Fall is my favorite time of year. The leaves are ready to turn, you need a sweater and it’s almost time to put on my favorite things – Ugg shoes. I went to Costco yesterday and they have Christmas out already!!! Did they forget about fall? Let me know if you’re heading our direction.
